CryEngine V is distributed according to the "pay as much as you want" model (or don't pay at all)
The Frankfurt company Crytek timed the announcement and launch of the fifth version of its engine to the San Francisco Game Developers Conference, and at the same time told how it plans to distribute it.
Let’s start with the technical details. The main innovations of CryEngine V are as follows:
- C support#
- DirectX 12 support
- VR support “out of the box”
- new UI
Crytek also announced the launch of the Crytek Marketplace asset store (similar to the Unity Asset Store and Unreal Marketplace), where you can buy both content from a German company and the creations of the developer community.
Plus, the CryEngine Answers service has appeared. In it, you can ask a question about working with the community engine.
But the most interesting thing, of course, is something else. Starting with the current, fifth, version, developers get access to all the functions and source code of the engine. Which is essential, without having to pay deductions from the product.
But you can still pay for using the engine. Only in this case, up to 70% of the amount can be transferred to the Indie Development Fund.
By the way, there was no official CryEngine 4. After the release of CryEngine 3, the version of the engine, which is older than version 3.6, was officially called simply CryEngine.
