Project Astoria was first presented at the Build conference last year.

The technology was intended to transfer applications from Android to Windows. At the same time, the company introduced Islandwood. This project served to port iOS applications to Windows.

A year later, the company announced that it sees no further sense to develop two almost identical projects. “From numerous reviews, we realized that developers do not need two technologies designed for porting from mobile OS to Windows,” said Kevin Gallo, General Manager of Microsoft, in his own blog.

The company will continue to develop Islandwood. “After carefully studying the reviews, we decided that we would focus on Windows Bridge for iOS and make it the only Bridge technology for all Windows 10 devices, including Xbox and PC,” Gallo added.

Note that Microsoft closed Project Astoria, but at the same time acquired Xamarin. This startup specializes in the development of cross-platform mobile applications. Gallo recommended Android developers to pay attention to the solutions of this particular company.
