The retention of the 30th day at Runeblade is 25%

The Finnish role-playing game for Apple Watch demonstrates very high retention parameters.

Developers from Helsinki-based Everywear Games, who raised $2.25 million in early autumn, reported on the success of their first project, the Runeblade role-playing game for Apple’s smartwatch.

Runeblade, we recall, is the most simplified dungeon crawler (reduced almost to a clicker), vaguely reminiscent of the role-playing series of the 90s, like Might & Magic and Wizardy. The game was released in April this year at the same time as the Apple Watch went on sale.

Judging by the figures published by PocketGamer, the project turned out to be very successful in terms of engagement and retention.

On average, players generate 20 sessions per day. The top 2% of users log into the game 100 times every day. However, the sessions are very short – 40 seconds.

The retention of the first day of the game is 57%, the retention of the 30th day is an impressive 25%.

The developers claim that they have achieved this thanks to the constant support of the game. In 7 months, they released 15 updates and localized the game into 6 languages. However, it’s funny, despite localization, the prevailing majority – 51.7% – of sessions are generated in the USA.

The information, in general, though curious, does not answer the two main questions: how big is the audience of the game, plus how much it earned in the months that it was available for download.

Therefore, the main question remains: is it worth taking up the development of games for the Apple Watch at all?
