Square Enix's main source of revenue is mobile and browser games
From the unexpected. The Japanese giant Square Enix, which today is mainly known as the publisher of console games such as Deus Ex, Life is Strange and Tomb Raider, earns most of its money on projects for mobile platforms and browsers.
This became known from the company’s recently published report for the first financial half of 2016.
The company’s net sales from April to September 2015 amounted to 86.4 billion yen ($708.8 million). This is 13.2% more than in the same period last year. Net profit also increased: from 5.7 billion yen ($46.7 million) to 7.3 billion yen ($59.8 million).
The digital entertainment segment brought the most money to Square Enix – 60.2 billion yen ($493.9 million). A year ago, the same figure was 43.8 billion yen ($359.3 million).
Of the mentioned 60.2 billion yen – 28.1 billion ($ 230 million) brought games for “smart devices” and browsers for PC. 19.1 billion yen ($ 156.7 million) earned for the first half of the year MMO, and another 12.9 billion yen ($105.8 million) brought AAA titles for consoles and PCs, which Square Enix calls HD games.
Based on the results obtained, the company’s analysts believe that over the next six months (the period from October 2015 to March 2016 inclusive, when Square Enix’s 2016 fiscal year officially ends), the company will be able to earn – including through the releases of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Just Cause 3, Deus Ex Mankind Divided and Hitman – from 200 billion yen to 220 billion yen (from $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion).
