Release of the Day: Beneath The Lighthouse
Today we urge you to pay attention to a cute, but at the same time capable of seriously infuriating the game Beneath The Lighthouse by Nitrome.
Nitrome flashers are known on the mobile market, first of all, thanks to their loose puzzle about the Vikings Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage, which they released together with Rovio a couple of years ago.
The British did not succeed in long-term cooperation with the Finns, but Flash developers took up the mobile market seriously after that. The most interesting thing is that Apple has fallen in love with them. And, most likely, of the 12 games released by the company to date, you have come across the icon of half of them in the App Store feature lists.
The feeling of Apple can be easily shared, because Nitrome has something to love. They often perceive the concept of retro-gaming and pretend to live literally. 8bit Doves, for example, was stylized as monochrome screens of portable consoles of the late 80s.
Beneath The Lighthouse is also such a very specific project, both in terms of visual and gameplay. It immediately seems to be made “antique”, and not in a modern complex. And at the same time, comparing it with something – if we talk about both style and mechanics – is still a task. He’s really special.
However, you can’t do without comparisons at all. The game resembles a real maze puzzle in which the player must carefully rotate the box to bring the little ball to the end. In Beneath The Lighthouse, the user must do the same.
In the game, the user controls not the hero – some kind of kolobok looking for the captain of a sea vessel – but the position of the level. In other words, if we want the character to move from point A to point B, we have to rotate the whole map a few degrees so that our bun moves where we need it.
In words, it seems simple, but in fact, difficulties arise already at the third level, because obstacles are very difficult to get around. And then the game begins to give emotions comparable to those that Flappy Bird once gave birth to in us. Only they are often brighter due to the fact that for the passage of each level, divided into three cards, they give only three hearts. Failed? Start going through all the level maps from the beginning.
Actually, the purchase of attempts – along with the ability to disable unobtrusive advertising – is the main monetization tool Beneath The Lighthouse, which, by the way, became one of the first games for Apple TV.
The average score of the game is low (I looked across the States on iOS, in the Russian Google Play the average score is much higher – more than 4 points).
This can be explained by a too sharp complexity curve, as well as a problem with learning in the project. Plus, despite the non-standard graphics, it, in fact, turned out to be too monotonous and faded.
