Rumor: Apple plans to compete with Sony and Microsoft for console gamers

The fourth generation of Apple TV, which Apple is going to present as part of the upcoming event scheduled for September 9, was created with an eye to gaming.

According to 9to5Mac, citing sources “aware of the product”, the new version of the Apple set-top box plans to compete with traditional consoles for the hearts of “TV gamers” with the help of new hardware, software and peripherals.

It is assumed that gamers will be able not only to download games directly from the App Store to Apple TV, as they do by installing new products on their smartphones and tablets, but also to play from the console using gamepads that will be distributed along with Apple TV.

The game controller will be equipped with both physical buttons and a touchpad. It is known for sure so far only about two buttons: Home and enabling Siri. It is known that with the help of voice commands of the latter, the player will be able to control the menu in Apple TV.

The 9to5Mac source called the deep integration of Apple TV with Siri the “main feature” of the new console, because, they say, it will be equally convenient for both gamers and those who do not consider themselves among them.

If the players don’t like the controller, they will be able to use one of the existing ones that support Apple. By the way, there are not so many of them now. The list can be found here.

Apple TV 4 has been built on iOS 9. Its deliveries are expected to begin in October. The price will fluctuate between $149-$199.

Note that so far this is nothing more than rumors. But, considering that in recent years almost all rumors about upcoming Apple releases have come true, and 9to5Mac is a well-respected publication, we can say with some confidence that we really should wait for a full-fledged Apple game console that will be able to play mobile games on your TV screen.
