A script for a BioShock film is currently being developed, with its storyline deriving from the original game

Vertigo Entertainment's producer Roy Lee has confirmed that the screenplay for the BioShock film is in the works, with the narrative being drawn from the original game. During a conversation with The Direct on September 9, 2025, Lee stated that the movie adaptation would closely follow the storyline of the first BioShock game.
Lee discussed the BioShock film while also talking about another project, The Long Walk, a dystopian horror directed by Francis Lawrence, who is set to helm the forthcoming BioShock adaptation. "The production of The Long Walk moved forward because BioShock experienced some delays related to script development," Lee explained.
The penning of BioShock's script is being undertaken by Michael Green, recognized for his work on Logan and Blade Runner 2049. Lee noted that as script refinements are ongoing, Francis Lawrence is engaged with directing The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, expected to premiere in November 2026, indicating he will commence work on BioShock thereafter.
Take-Two Interactive has been striving for nearly twenty years to transform the dystopian adventure game series into a film. Previously, in 2008, Take-Two partnered with Universal Pictures, enlisting Gore Verbinski from Pirates of the Caribbean fame to direct. However, the project was shelved in 2013 due to budget constraints and directorial changes.
In 2022, Netflix announced its initiative to develop a live-action BioShock film in collaboration with Vertigo Entertainment and 2K. Yet, in 2024, Netflix decided to scale down the project’s budget to create a more intimate narrative. Lee mentioned at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 that a strategic shift at Netflix prompted a re-evaluation of the BioShock project.
Lee explained, "Due to a change in leadership, the financial resources have been reduced. We are now focusing on a more personal story, which contrasts with the originally planned large-scale production."
