2K has implemented staff layoffs within the team developing the free-to-play shooter Project Ethos, suggesting a shift toward a "new direction and focus"
The gaming company 2K has implemented layoffs at its studio, 31st Union, which has been developing the free-to-play title, Project Ethos. Information on these staff reductions was initially communicated in an internal note by studio leader Ben Brinkman, and subsequently shared with GamesIndustry.biz.
Project Ethos is now being described as a "bold new game with a renewed direction and vision— a skill-based PvP roguelike experience that will challenge and excite players." This marks a slight shift from its initial introduction as a "roguelike hero shooter".
Brinkman expressed the necessity for structural changes within the team since his start at 31st Union. "To achieve our objectives, we need to adapt by working more efficiently," he stated. "Therefore, we made the tough choice to downsize our team to better fit our current development stage, leading to the unfortunate loss of some team members today."
Brinkman also highlighted his confidence in the project and its team's future, as well as the continued support from Take-Two and 2K management.
The number of impacted positions was not specified by 2K. Nonetheless, a new piece of concept artwork was unveiled, indicating a visual shift towards a unique, fantasy-themed style, deviating from its previous resemblance to Fortnite.
31st Union, established in 2019, initially appeared amidst a promising climate for hero shooters. Project Ethos was made public in 2024, shortly after Sony's hero shooter Concord ceased operations. The game had a tepid reception, cited as a reason for the exit of the former studio head Michael Condry, who previously led the Call of Duty developer, Sledgehammer Games. Brinkman took over leadership six months afterward.
The game remains a part of Take-Two's future title announcements. CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously emphasized Project Ethos as part of what he described as "the most robust lineup I've ever been able to talk about in advance."
