To mark the 12th anniversary of the Payday franchise, Starbreeze has introduced a new subscription model for Payday 2 on the Steam platform. This service was revealed on September 24, 2025, and allows players to access all downloadable content for $4.99 monthly or $19.99 for a six-month period, with the flexibility to cancel at any time.

Gustav Nisser, who heads commercial operations at Starbreeze Entertainment, expressed in a press release the intention behind this initiative: "With over ten years of content in Payday 2, we aim to offer enhanced flexibility to our players."

The subscription is designed to be both convenient and economical, appealing to both returning players eager to explore unseen DLCs and newcomers. Despite this new offering, existing downloadable content will remain purchasable individually, providing players with additional options.

Earlier in August 2025, Starbreeze shared its Q2 interim results, indicating a 64% profit rise for the quarter, but still recording a loss of SEK 25.4 million (approximately $2.66 million).

Payday 2 and Payday 3's net sales saw a year-over-year decrease for that quarter, yet January to June 2025 sales data showed an overall increase. However, third-party publishing revenues declined year-over-year, which CEO Adolf Kristjansson pointed out, emphasizing the significant resources it demands.

The company is now shifting its focus more narrowly on the Payday series and internal projects. Kristjansson remarked on the challenges of thriving in an increasingly saturated global gaming market, underscoring the value of strong intellectual property like Payday in cutting through the market noise.
