Free-to-play: compare the key indicators of popular genres

The analytical company DeltaDNA compared the key performance indicators (KPIs) of shareware projects of different genres to find out what the market averages look like.

The company ‘s experts conditionally divided the games into 4 genres:

  • Action – first-person shooters and RPGs;
  • strategies (Strategy) – RTS, builders;
  • puzzles (Puzzle) – match-3, hidden puzzles, puzzles and quizzes;
  • Casino (Social Casino) – slots, card games and so on.

These genres were compared according to the following indicators: first day retention (D1), 7 day retention (D7), user conversion (%Convert to Spender), ARPU, average length of the first session (Minutes 1st Session) and user conversion after the first session (%Spenders Convert During 1st Session).

Here’s what we managed to find out:

  • actions and strategies have the highest retention rates of the first day and ARPU;
  • despite the fact that the casino has the lowest indicators of the first day, on the seventh day the games of this genre break out ahead;
  • strategies provide the highest user conversion after the first session.

DeltaDNA analysts believe that an analysis of the standard mechanics for each genre will help you understand what your game specifically lacks for success. For example, if the project belongs to strategies, then for long-term retention of users it is worth borrowing techniques from social casinos – such as frequent updates and social interaction.
