Avalanche Studio Group is set to handle the worldwide publishing, marketing, and distribution responsibilities for games produced by Supermassive Games
A collaboration has been established between Nordisk Games' subsidiaries, Avalanche Studios Group and Supermassive Games, following a recent announcement of a publishing agreement.
Under this agreement, Avalanche will handle the global publication, marketing, and distribution of Supermassive's games, starting with Directive 8020, which debuted earlier in the year.
While maintaining their creative independence and having control over their individual game portfolios and development strategies, both companies will benefit from "operational support across finance, people, and IT."
Allan Mathson Hansen, CEO of Nordisk Film & Nordisk Games, commented on the partnership, emphasizing the importance of focusing on long-term sustainability for the studios amid an evolving industry. He stated that this shared foundation is designed to funnel resources directly into game development and innovation. He praised Avalanche for its established publishing expertise and operational capabilities, and recognized Supermassive’s excellence in storytelling and craftsmanship.
Adding to this, Avalanche CEO Stefanía Halldórsdóttir highlighted the accomplishments of their title, Hunter: Call of the Wild. Even after nine years, it continues to engage two million players each month, demonstrating the robustness of their publishing and live service operations. She expressed anticipation for supporting Supermassive's successful creation of engaging horror experiences and expanding their global reach.
In a strategic move in 2021, Nordisk Games secured a 30% stake in Supermassive Games, marking its ninth acquisition in the gaming sector and its first investment in a UK-based company.
The acquisition of Avalanche Studios by Nordisk in 2018 represented its largest purchase at that time, following an initial investment of over $10 million as a minority shareholder in 2017.
However, both studios have recently faced workforce reductions. In August, Supermassive experienced a layoff impacting up to 75 employees, marking the third such occurrence in the past three years. Avalanche Studios also faced similar challenges, shutting down their Liverpool studio in November 2025, which led to 31 personnel being laid off, alongside reductions in Malmö and Stockholm.
