Microsoft has initiated trials for ad-supported game streaming on its Xbox platform.

The test, available to members of the Xbox Insider Program, allows users to stream games free for one hour, with ads shown beforehand.

While the ads precede each gaming session, the gameplay experience itself remains unaffected. Joining the trial is voluntary, and participants retain the ability to select alternative gaming methods whenever they wish.

Xbox emphasized that ads in their service aim to "create value" and maintain a quality standard akin to their content.

The objective of this trial is to provide users with more affordable gaming options across devices they currently possess.

Microsoft noted that advertising in games has a long history, encompassing everything from in-game placements to free-to-play strategies, although not always executed with players' interests at the forefront.

When executed effectively, advertising can reduce access costs, offering players new avenues to engage with games without purchasing streaming services upfront, thereby increasing player bases.

Back in 2022, it was suggested that Microsoft considered incorporating in-game ads in free-to-play games on its streaming service.

A year later, Tim Stuart, the former CFO of Xbox, hinted that such ventures might be aimed at regions where streaming services are more commonly used.

In markets like Africa, India, or Southeast Asia, which may not primarily use consoles, the approach could involve watching a short advertisement in exchange for two hours of game streaming.
