In Bulgaria, they will not increase the tax on online gambling games or ban their advertising
The Bulgarian government has rejected a proposal to tighten the regulation of online gambling in the country. This proposal was previously put forward by opposition parties.
To recall, the opposition recommended that Bulgarian authorities ban the advertisement of online gambling in densely populated areas, increase the tax on operators' revenue to 30%, and double the licensing fees.
In a media comment, Bulgaria's Deputy Minister of Finance, Lyudmila Petkova, stated that the authorities are open to revisiting the gambling law but will proceed with caution and refrain from adopting such drastic measures. Petkova reminded that in 2024 Bulgaria had already increased the tax on online gambling from 20% to 25%, and further hikes would only harm the market.
"At first glance, this proposal seems very good, but in reality, it will lead operators to move from the legal market to the illegal one. The share of the gray sector in the gambling market is already about 40%," Petkova emphasized.
