In a strategic move, Tripledot Studios has purchased the games portfolio from AppLovin for a sum of $800 million. This acquisition includes 10 studios, thus enabling Tripledot to broaden its footprint significantly in major regions such as the United States and Asia.
The transaction, split evenly between cash and equity, allows AppLovin to become a minority shareholder in Tripledot Studios. The agreement is expected to be finalized by summer 2025, subject to regulatory approval.
With this acquisition, Tripledot's games will engage around 25 million users daily, propelling the company's annual gross revenues close to $2 billion.
AppLovin made the decision to sell its games division public back in February.
The studios welcomed into Tripledot with this purchase include Athena, Belka, Clipwire, Leyi, Lion Studios, Machine Zone, Magic Tavern, PeopleFun, Zen Life, and Zero Gravity.
Earlier in April, after laying off 97 employees at AppLovin, including members from its subsidiary studio Machine Zone, a former staff member indicated that "most of Machine Zone was shut down."
Lior Shiff, co-founder and CEO of Tripledot, commented on the acquisition, stating, "Our mission is to become the world’s most successful mobile game studio. Acquiring AppLovin's games portfolio is a big step towards achieving that goal - taking us from being a high-performing challenger to a true global leader. It gives us additional scale, diversification and access to the best talent globally. We’re thrilled to welcome these incredible teams to Tripledot."
Adam Foroughi of AppLovin remarked that AppLovin has never primarily been a game developer. In his statement, he expressed confidence in Tripledot's ability under Lior's leadership to enhance these studios' success.
Tripledot highlights diversification as a primary benefit of the acquisition, noting that post-acquisition, no single game will account for more than 10% of the company's overall revenue.
