Dynasty Warriors: Origins peaks at nearly 70k CCU on Steam, Koei Tecmo's second-biggest launch by that metric

Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the first main installment in the long-running franchise in almost seven years, has been released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Let’s take a closer look at its early metrics.

Launched globally on January 17, Dynasty Warriors: Origins received positive reviews from critics, with its Metascore ranging from 78 (Xbox Series X) to 85/100 (PC). This makes it the highest-rated game in the series, above Dynasty Warriors 3 (78/100), DW4 (78), DW2 (75).

Origins currently has a “Very Positive” rating (94%) on Steam based on nearly 5,000 reviews.  According to Steam Scout, which analyzes both direct purchases through Steam and key activations, 57.12% of all reviews are written in Simplified Chinese. This is not surprising given the popularity of the Three Kingdoms setting in the country (and Musou games in general).

The top 5 languages also include English (21.9%), Traditional Chinese (10%), Korean (4.65%), and Japanese (3.05%). It is worth noting that Dynasty Warriors is historically a console franchise, so the share of Japanese players could be much higher.

The new game’s popularity in Asian countries is also evidenced by the spikes in its concurrent player count that occur during evening hours in countries like China or Japan (see the graph below). According to SteamDB, Dynasty Warriors: Origin peaked at 69,483 concurrent players on Valve’s platform.

This makes it Koei Tecmo’s second-biggest release on Steam by peak CCU, behind only Wu Long: Fallen Dynasty (75.9k CCU). Other titles in the top 10 include Nioh 2 (41.3k CCU), Wild Hearts (28.5k CCU), Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake (18.9k CCU), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV (16.4k CCU).

Dynasty Warriors is Koei Tecmo’s core IP, spanning 10 mainline games and numerous spin-offs over nearly three decades. These titles usually feature famous heroes from the Three Kingdoms period and massive battles against hundreds of enemies. The Dynasty Warriors series has sold over 21 million units globally.
