Accenture has released a new report about the gaming industry based on data from 4,000 gamers across the US, China, Japan, and the UK.

Accenture divides the total value of the gaming industry into:

  • Direct revenue — $200 billion. It includes digital PC games and subscriptions; mobile and handheld console games and subscriptions; mobile and handheld console hardware; mobile in-game ads; mobile games and subscriptions.
  • Indirect revenue — $100 billion. It includes PC gaming hardware, mobile devices, PC gaming accessories, gaming video content, and eSports.

Other key data from the report

  • China accounts for 26% of global gaming revenue, followed by the US (24%), Japan (12%), and UK (3%).
  • The industry has increased by 500 million players over the last three years. The total number of gamers in the world is now 2.7 billion, with Accenture expecting to see 400 million new gamers by the end of 2023.
  • The portrait of gamers will also change, with these new players expected to be 60% women, 30% under 25 years old, and 33% non-white. For comparison, longtime gamers are now 61% male, 79% over 25 years old, and 76% white.
  • 84% of respondents play video games to connect with other people who have similar interests.
  • Gamers spend 16 hours a week playing games on average. They also spend an average of 8 hours a week watching or participating in streams.
  • 66% of respondents are more likely to play a game if it’s socially responsible. It means that it promotes environmental sustainability or supports marginalized communities.
