Authorities have detained a suspect accused of hacking, which led to the exposure of GTA Online's daily earnings

The Dutch police have detained a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam as part of their investigation into ShinyHunters. This hacking group is accused by the FBI of a data breach that unveiled sensitive GTA Online's financial information earlier this year.

According to reports from Rockstar Intel via Kotaku, the Dutch National Police publicly acknowledged the arrest on September 28. The suspect's identity was not disclosed in their statement.

Reuters has identified the individual as Pepijn van der Stap, who is employed as the offensive cybersecurity lead at Neo Security in Amsterdam. Van der Stap, who has previous convictions related to hacking, joined the company this year. Nevertheless, the FBI maintains that he has been leading ShinyHunters since 2025. The group disagrees with this allegation and accuses Dutch authorities of negligence.

ShinyHunters is accused of breaching over 100 organizations, including notable entities like Rockstar, Ticketmaster, and even the FBI itself.

In April, the group breached Rockstar and attempted extortion by threatening to leak sensitive information unless a ransom was paid. Despite Rockstar's refusal, the group proceeded to release the data, which revealed that GTA Online earns over a million dollars daily.

This incident comes as another challenge for Rockstar's security, following a separate leak in August by another group, CyberLeek, disclosing GTA 6 gameplay. This resulted in Take-Two filing subpoenas against Microsoft, Discord, and Twitter/X to uncover the perpetrators.

After the arrest, Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI's Cyber Division, issued a stern warning to the remaining ShinyHunters members emphasizing the risks of anonymity failing to protect them and urging them to come forward.

Concurrently, Rockstar is involved in a legal dispute with the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain over the termination of 34 employees last October. The dismissals are claimed to be retaliatory actions against union activities.
