In Brazil, hundreds of illegal betting sites were created after the ban on online betting
Late last week, the Brazilian authorities temporarily banned online betting in the country. According to the Bet Legal platform, the ban immediately led to a surge in illegal betting sites — 428 such sites were launched between September 25 and 27.
Thus, after the implementation of restrictions in Brazil, an average of 143 new illegal betting sites have been appearing per day. Before this, from September 21 to 24, the average was 62 sites per day, and from June 1 to August 31, it was only 13.7 sites per day.
Plinio Lemos Jorge, president of the National Association of Games and Lotteries of Brazil (ANJL), has already stated that the rapid increase in sites was expected.
"Underground sites have expanded their range of services and continued to operate outside the law and control. Now they will take advantage of the ban on legal betting to draw players to the illegal market," he noted.
According to ANJL estimates, due to the ban, the Brazilian authorities not only forfeited "multi-billion" revenues from online bets but also pushed over 30 million players into the illegal segment.
