Discord resumes its age verification process after addressing privacy concerns raised by users

Discord has revamped its age verification system, allowing users to verify their age through several options that don't require personal IDs or video submissions.

According to an announcement made recently by Discord's co-founder and CTO, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, age verification can now be completed using credit cards, platforms like the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, Google Wallet, or AgeKey, which maintains user privacy.

"By introducing a universal strategy that includes non-biometric alternatives, we are proactively addressing potential legislative requirements that could be less protective of privacy," Vishnevskiy noted.

"The policy decisions made today will influence both the safety of teenagers and privacy standards for a long time. I urge everyone to voice their opinions on these matters," he added.

Initially, Discord made an announcement in February that age verification would be mandatory for all members from March, but this was delayed until the latter half of 2026 following backlash over privacy issues. At that time, Vishnevskiy admitted that Discord needed to be clearer about its objectives and processes.

The latest update from Discord promises to "openly list each third-party age verification service and specify their identities," which is currently available for review.

Discord has outlined how they estimate age groups and has published its first set of age verification data in the 2026 Transparency Report, covering implementations in the UK and Australia.

Vishnevskiy previously emphasized that trust must be demonstrated through actions, not assertions. "This launch represents a chance for our community to hold us accountable. Mistakes will happen, but judge us by how we address them: our ability to refine age group estimations, correct errors swiftly, and continually publish data, all to ensure transparency. That’s how we aim to build trust," he stated.

The age verification system automatically categorizes users into specific age groups based on their account activity or affiliated servers without evaluating chats or communications.

There are three categories: Adult (18+), Teen (13-17), and Unconfirmed. Accounts without confirmed ages remain unconfirmed until sufficient data is collected to classify them, but users can verify their age in their settings to avoid usage restrictions.
