The US Senate is set to conduct an investigation into Roblox amid allegations that the platform "prioritizes revenue and engagement" at the expense of child safety
The US Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism is examining the practices of Roblox, raising concerns that the platform may prioritize profit and user interaction over ensuring child safety.
In a letter addressed to Roblox CEO David Baszucki, highlighted by Kotaku, Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin expressed that "the purported criminal activity on Roblox necessitates scrutiny from Congress."
The senators accused the platform of promoting Roblox as a secure digital space for young children, yet public records suggest otherwise. In response, Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief safety officer, informed PC Gamer that their platform is founded on safety and that they are committed to safeguarding children.
Kaufman stated, "We are unwavering in our dedication to safety and look forward to clarifying how we protect young users." Roblox is required to submit safety-related documents concerning abuse, harassment, and financial exploitation by August 31, 2026.
The Senate committee has asked Roblox to deliver nearly 30 categories of records, including reports from 2023 to 2025 on sexual exploitation and abuse of minors, the company's responses, and the actions taken against offending accounts. Details are also needed on human review percentages, account bans, bullying incidents involving minors, and related measures during this period.
The letter also highlighted that individuals have been arrested for serious offenses against children they contacted through Roblox, including grooming, sexual abuse, kidnapping, and even murder. In 2025, Roblox reported over 65,000 suspected child exploitation cases to the National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children, more than doubling from 2024.
The platform is accused of facilitating the exchange of child sexual abuse material and engaging children in explicit virtual environments, as well as enabling coercion and in-person meetings, issues that are causing significant distress.
The statement sternly warns that, "The welfare of children on your platform is at risk, and Congress stands ready to act." Several US states, including Louisiana and Los Angeles County, have initiated legal actions against Roblox concerning child endangerment concerns.
Similar apprehensions have been noted by the Australian government, which has voiced its own concerns regarding the safety of children on the platform, describing them as "a significant issue for many Australian families and caregivers."
Roblox has taken steps to enhance safety by implementing measures such as blocking direct messaging for users under 13, introducing global facial recognition for chat access, adding a "sensitive issues" label to certain content, and strengthening its moderation policies.
