Sony faces an antitrust investigation in Mexico over its decision to phase out discs

Sony's decision to cease production of PlayStation discs starting January 2028 has caught the attention of Mexican politicians. They intend to ask Mexico's antitrust regulator to investigate the company's gaming division.

These plans were announced by legislator Irais Reyes and Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio. They noted that Sony's discontinuation of discs would make the PlayStation Store virtually the only place to purchase new games for PlayStation console owners. In the view of the politicians, this will severely harm gamers.

"Consumers will cease to truly own games. With digital distribution, you do not buy a game in the traditional sense—you acquire a license, which means access to content is fully dependent on the company's terms," explained Colosio.

Additionally, the politicians fear that Sony's actions will significantly harm retailers and effectively destroy the used game market.

Reyes and Colosio believe that as a result, Sony will gain too much power over the PlayStation gaming market, as it will simultaneously control several segments: consoles, digital stores, game distribution, and pricing. Ultimately, they are convinced that a full-fledged monopoly will form.

Sony has not commented on the statement by the Mexican politicians.
