Blizzard has filed a lawsuit against a private World of Warcraft server, accusing it of "large-scale, egregious, and ongoing infringement of Blizzard's intellectual property"
A legal action regarding copyright has been initiated by Blizzard against the unauthorized World of Warcraft server initiative known as Project Ascension.
As detailed by Aftermath, with over one million users, Blizzard’s legal team alleges that Project Ascension has been involved in distributing a large number of pirated versions of its proprietary World of Warcraft software. The company describes this as a profitable venture that capitalizes on the World of Warcraft gaming experience.
According to the legal documents, the defendants have established a business heavily reliant on the extensive and severe violation of Blizzard’s intellectual rights.
The lawsuit indicates that actions like those of the defendants erode Blizzard’s classic and community-oriented offerings, diminish the World of Warcraft experience, and inflict substantial damage on Blizzard and its numerous creative professionals.
Additionally, Project Ascension is accused of causing considerable and lasting harm to Blizzard.
The alleged damages encompass lost income from previous World of Warcraft players who turned to Project Ascension to avoid Blizzard's subscription charges. The company's intellectual property is reportedly being used, altered, and monetized unlawfully.
The lawsuit further highlights concerns regarding "bulletproof" servers in Russia, managed by the Aeza Group, which faced sanctions last year for supporting cybercriminal activities affecting the U.S. and other countries.
