Bungie reaches an undisclosed settlement with a writer, concluding the Destiny 2 copyright lawsuit
The legal dispute between Bungie and a writer, who accused the company of using parts of Destiny 2's narrative from his own work, has reached a settlement.
Author Matthew Kelsey Martineau had claimed that Destiny 2's story arcs, The Red War and Curse of Osiris, borrowed elements from his writings, which were posted on WordPress in 2013 and 2014. These included aspects like faction and character details. Read more about the lawsuit here.
Bungie sought to have the lawsuit dismissed by presenting various supporting documents, such as gameplay footage from Destiny 2, references from Destinypedia, and an affidavit by Tyson Green, the game's director. However, since the implicated storylines had been "vaulted" or removed from the game, the court denied Bungie's motion to dismiss.
The Game Post has reported that a settlement has been reached between the parties, although specific terms remain confidential.
Unless there are objections within 60 days, the agreement will be considered final by the court.
Following Bungie's acquisition for $3.6 billion by Sony in 2022, Sony shared during an investor meeting that the sales figures and user engagement for Destiny 2 have not met their initial expectations. For more details on this, visit the official report.
