The IWGB has accused Rockstar of engaging in union-busting activities after allegedly dismissing more than 30 workers
Rockstar Games has come under criticism from the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which claims the gaming company engaged in anti-union activities. This allegation follows the reported dismissal of 30 to 40 employees on October 30.
According to a Bloomberg article, those dismissed were either union members or involved in organizing efforts at the company.
"Rockstar has just carried out the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry," declared Alex Marshall, president of the IWGB, in a statement on their website.
Marshall emphasized, "This open disregard for legal rights and the lives of the employees who generate substantial profits for them is an insult to both their fans and the wider industry."
He added that despite what he described as a targeted action against organized labor, the union at Rockstar remains determined to fight for better working conditions while continuing to contribute to much-loved games.
In response, Rockstar's parent company, Take Two, disputed the union's allegations, arguing that the firings were due to "gross misconduct" alone and expressing full backing for Rockstar's goals and methods.
Alan Lewis, head of global corporate communications at Take Two, stated to PC Gamer, "We aim to create top-tier entertainment by ensuring our talented teams work in supportive environments with career growth opportunities. Our values are centered around collaboration, excellence, and kindness. Rockstar Games let go a limited number of staff for severe misconduct, not for any other reason. We remain committed to Rockstar’s chief objectives and practices."
