"Sony is Striving for a Monopoly": Tencent on the Horizon Plagiarism Lawsuit

The Chinese giant Tencent has approached the court with a request to dismiss the lawsuit from Sony, which was filed due to the similarities between the game Light of Motiram and the Horizon series projects. According to Tencent, there is actually no plagiarism involved — Light of Motiram merely incorporates established gaming ideas and concepts.

Tencent commented on the Sony lawsuit, which concerns Light of Motiram

The company indicated that both Light of Motiram and the Horizon series contain elements that appear in dozens of other games, from The Legend of Zelda to Biomutant and Far Cry. For example, red-haired heroines, ruined civilizations, and mechanical animals. Therefore, Tencent noted that Sony does not have exclusive rights to these elements.

Tencent believes that Sony hopes to "obtain an unacceptable monopoly on genre standards" through the lawsuit.

Moreover, Tencent reminded that the developers of the Horizon series themselves did not consider their idea unique. In a documentary about the creation of Horizon Zero Dawn, they admitted that a similar concept had already been implemented by the creators of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. At one point, Sony even doubted whether to give Guerrilla Games the "green light," but ultimately decided not to abandon the game.

Tencent emphasized that Light of Motiram has not been released yet, meaning Sony's lawsuit is based only on hypotheses about what the game will look like. However, by its planned release in 2027, it may change significantly.
