Krafton recently released a statement addressing changes in leadership at Unknown Worlds, suggesting that former executives neglected their duties. This, they assert, led to confusion and necessitated a delay in the release of "Subnautica 2" to 2026 instead of the originally planned early 2024.

The publisher noted that multiple attempts were made to bring back Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire to their previous roles. However, both declined, with Cleveland opting to concentrate on a personal film project rather than the development of "Subnautica 2", particularly after the unsuccessful release of "Moonbreaker".

Krafton expressed disappointment with the former executives, stating that the absence of leadership resulted in delays and a breach of trust with fans. Consequently, the decision to restructure the executive team was made to ensure quality in the gaming experience.

The company also elaborated on a $250 million earn-out as part of the acquisition, originally intended to be shared among employees under the leadership of three former executives. Although approximately 90% was earmarked for them based on their commitment to the game's development, Krafton has pledged fair compensation for remaining staff who continue to work diligently on "Subnautica 2".

In reaction, Charlie Cleveland, co-founder of Unknown Worlds, has initiated legal action against Krafton. In a subreddit update, he labeled the situation as "explosive and surreal", reiterating that "Subnautica 2" is prepared for early access, despite Krafton's postponement.

Cleveland emphasized the lawsuit is crucial to addressing issues and clearing misconceptions about the earn-out. He stressed the historical profit-sharing with the team, indicating the commitment to continue this practice with the earn-out, providing rewards to the team for their efforts.
