Apple has lodged an appeal against a court decision that favored Epic Games regarding third-party app payments

Apple has lodged an appeal against the recent U.S. decision that sided with Epic Games regarding third-party payment systems for iOS applications.

According to The Verge, Apple submitted the appeal to the Northern District of California Court on May 5, 2025. The document detailing the appeal can be viewed publicly.

The decision from last week bars Apple from taking fees on transactions conducted outside of its App Store in the U.S. Furthermore, Apple is restricted from preventing app developers from directing customers to make purchases externally, such as through web transactions.

The ruling stated, "Apple's objective: to deter consumers from utilizing alternative purchasing methods and preserve its monopolistic revenue model." It further criticized Apple's intentions to sustain a lucrative revenue stream contrary to the court's injunction.

Additionally, the ruling mentioned Apple and its vice president of finance, Alex Roman, could be referred to the local U.S. attorney for potential investigation into allegations of criminal contempt, citing that Roman "lied under oath."

The Verge reported Apple's intentions to appeal the court's decision last week as well.

In compliance with the ruling, Apple has updated its App Review Guidelines within the U.S., allowing developers to advise users about making payments outside of the app-based system.
