A Japanese modder has received a suspended prison sentence for modifying Nintendo Switch consoles

A court in Japan has handed down a two-year prison term to a modder.

NTC reported, with additional details from Automaton, that a man aged 58 was punished for altering and selling Nintendo Switch consoles illegally.

The individual was accused of soldering components to modify the consoles, allowing them to play pirated copies of games.

At a court session held on April 14, the defendant was found guilty of violating Nintendo's trademark rights and received a sentence of two years imprisonment, which is suspended for three years, along with a fine of approximately $3500.

This case marks a first for such a legal action in Japan, as noted by Automaton.

Meanwhile, in other Nintendo Switch news, internal analyses from a key supplier for Apple and Nintendo indicate that consoles in the United States will continue to face a 145% import tariff on products coming from China.
