The founder and director of Amaze has decided to step down after an investigation into "inappropriate" behavior
Thorsten Wiedemann, founder and director of Amaze, has taken a step back, issuing an apology for "inappropriate" conduct and "verbal offensiveness" towards colleagues and attendees at an August event.
The organization, known for highlighting independent and arthouse games, immersive tech, and digital culture, admitted in a statement that breaches of its codes of conduct happened in Sheffield, UK.
Addressing "serious concerns regarding event safety and integrity," the Amaze Berlin team disclosed it had explored several reports of unprofessional actions prior to the event, along with misconduct and verbal incidents under the influence of alcohol during the gathering.
Describing the behavior as "unacceptable," they apologized to everyone involved in the Sheffield production, including performers, DJs, and attendees inconvenienced by these actions.
Wiedemann personally apologized by saying, "I am truly sorry for my actions at Amaze Sheffield in August 2024. Reflecting on what happened, I acknowledge my improper behavior and accept full responsibility. I disrespected the production team as the event was concluding, which was intolerable. I was verbally offensive toward a DJ participating, which was inappropriate. I intruded on others' personal space, disregarding boundaries.
"I am deeply remorseful for my behavior throughout the event, recognizing its harmful effects on others. This was completely unacceptable, and I will work to ensure this does not recur and to mend what was harmed.
"To all affected, and to the Amaze Berlin team and community, I apologize for breaching your trust. I appreciate those who reported the issues," Wiedemann stated.
"Consequently, I am withdrawing from my role in this year's Berlin festival and pausing all representative and transition duties. This gives the team room to enhance our Safer Space initiatives and maintain event integrity in the future."
He emphasized that Amaze was established to foster a respectful, inclusive, and motivating environment within the gaming and cultural spheres, saying, "Our mission remains intact. Misconduct has no place here, whether by visitors, team members, or myself."
Following the complaint's validation, Wiedemann will "temporarily step away" from public roles and will not participate in the Amaze Berlin 2025 lineup.
The organization has redistributed decision-making and major responsibilities, committing to creating safer environments, enforcing its conduct standards, and revising emergency protocols.
"Amaze transcends any single individual," Wiedemann asserted. "It’s a global community driven by many. I hope my hiatus allows me a chance to grow from my errors, so we may persist in our mission—uniting diverse global artists and advancing arthouse games to greater heights."
