Hidden Variable has filed a lawsuit against Skullgirls publisher Autumn Games, seeking $1.2 million for allegedly unpaid payments

On January 21, 2025, Hidden Variable revealed it had "ceased involvement in Skullgirls Mobile and 2nd Encore" following a disagreement with Autumn Games.

According to a statement from Hidden Variable, this issue has been escalated to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Filed documents show Hidden Variable is pursuing legal action against Autumn Games for alleged contractual violations and issues of fair dealing, as well as for compensation for services provided.

Hidden Variable asserts it met all contractual requirements while Autumn Games failed to fulfill its obligations, including a $131,500 payment due starting November 2024, along with approximately $15,000 in expenses. Payments of $139,000 were expected bi-monthly into March 2025.

The company is seeking to recover $1,227,308.98, including interest, that it claims is owed.

Furthermore, Hidden Variable allowed Autumn Games access to necessary account information to ensure ongoing community support for the game, even after payment delays.

The statement from Hidden Variable expresses pride in their decade-long contribution to the Skullgirls franchise, including advancements in both Skullgirls Mobile and Skullgirls 2nd Encore, and their support for the game's vibrant community.

While expressing gratitude to fans, the company noted that it couldn't provide further details until the dispute reaches a conclusion.

In response, Autumn Games' Jason Donnell recognized community concerns and described Skullgirls as a project born of passion from both creators and players.

He thanked fans for their ongoing support and acknowledged past shortcomings, promising transformative changes moving forward.

Autumn Games underlined that they remain an independent group of developers committed to the game, announcing the upcoming release of Guilds, now in progress since they assumed new responsibilities.
