Hidden Variable has filed a lawsuit against Autumn Games, the publisher of Skullgirls, seeking $1.2 million in outstanding payments

Hidden Variable disclosed that from January 21, 2025, it ceased its involvement in developing "Skullgirls Mobile" and "2nd Encore" due to a disagreement with Autumn Games.
As detailed in a release, the dispute has been officially brought before the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Legal documents suggest that Hidden Variables is pursuing legal action against Autumn Games for alleged contract violations, including breach and anticipatory breach of contract, and for outstanding payments and services.
The claim states Hidden Variables met its obligations, but Autumn Games failed to make a payment of $131,500 due in November 2024, as well as subsequent payments on November 15, December 1, December 15, January 1, and January 15. Additionally, approximately $15,000 in expenses remain unpaid.
Further payments of $139,000 were anticipated on February 1, and additional amounts on February 15, March 1, and March 15, 2025.
Hidden Variables is seeking a total of $1,227,308.98, plus interest, in its lawsuit.
Despite the missing payments, Hidden Variables provided Autumn Games with necessary account information to maintain community support without harming the game.
The group expressed pride in its decade-long involvement with "Skullgirls," highlighting their contributions across various versions, competitive events, and partnerships, including the Skullgirls Webtoon.
The team conveyed their appreciation for the community's support and announced they would refrain from further comments until the legal matter is resolved.
In a statement from Autumn Games' Jason Donnell, he acknowledged concerns arising from recent news, emphasizing the game’s significance as more than just a project—a labor of love shared by creators and players.
While expressing gratitude to the game's supporters, Donnell admitted to not fulfilling promises made to fans, resulting in the decision to enact changes.
Autumn Games clarified it is driven by genuine passion and creativity, not by corporate interests. The company confirmed the development of Guilds is ongoing, following the recent takeover.
