The text-based MMO browser game, Urban Dead, is set to end just before its 20th anniversary, largely due to the UK's newly implemented Online Safety Act.

Developer Kevan Davis, in a public communication noted by GameDeveloper, explained that the law encompasses "all social and gaming platforms where users interact," which includes this solo web project, incurring "heavy corporate-sized fines" that make it "unfeasible" to maintain the game online.

Davis stated, "It is with regret that I must announce Urban Dead will cease operations on Friday, March 14, 2025, due to changes in UK web law."

"The Online Safety Act, coming into effect soon, covers all interactive social and gaming sites, especially those lacking firm age controls. Given the risk of substantial fines even for small individual projects like this, I've regrettably determined that continuing Urban Dead isn't practical."

"Consequently, 19 years, 8 months, and 11 days after its inception, Urban Dead will shut down. There will be no grand finale—no dramatic ending or escape. Settle your score or stand firm in your part of Malton, as the game will end at noon UTC on March 14."

On the shutdown date, the game’s wiki will switch to read-only mode, though Davis mentioned that any potential future revisits or revivals of Urban Dead will be announced on the official site.

Davis offered to refund donations made for IP unlocks in the past six months upon request, noting the closure was "unexpected."

"If you’re appreciative of the game’s longevity, you might consider offering me a cup of freeze-dried coffee," Davis humorously suggested.

Last month, the UK government decided against amending consumer laws to give better protection to UK gamers following the discontinuation or "disabling" of live service games.
