Square Enix denounces a "stalking" mod in Final Fantasy 14 and warns of potential legal measures

Naoki Yoshida, who oversees the production and direction of Final Fantasy 14, has addressed the community regarding the controversy surrounding the "Playerscope" mod. The mod is believed to track player activity across various characters without user permission.

In his statement, Yoshida acknowledged the use of unauthorized tools to access certain character data in Final Fantasy 14 that are not normally visible, potentially exposing parts of an account ID and linking information across different characters under the same account.

IGN reports that avoiding data collection by this mod requires users to join its private Discord group.

As a result, Square Enix is asking for the removal of the problematic mod from public sites, a request that seems to have been followed, though private sharing may still occur. Legal action is being pursued against those responsible for the mod.

Yoshida assured players that sensitive information, like addresses or payment details linked to Square Enix accounts, remains secure and inaccessible through these tools.

He emphasized the company's commitment to providing a safe gaming environment and urged players to avoid using third-party tools. He also requested that players refrain from spreading information related to these tools, including installation instructions.

Yoshida concluded by reminding the community that the use of unauthorized tools violates the Final Fantasy 14 user agreement.
