The union representing screen actors, SAG-AFTRA, has established a new contract with the AI voice firm Ethovox. This arrangement ensures protections and fair remuneration for performers.

Under this contract, actors who contribute to the foundational voice model of Ethovox must grant permission for the use of their voices. They will be compensated initially and receive continuous payments throughout the model's existence.

The startup, led by CEO Cissy Jones and CPO Julian Kwasneski, specifies that its voice model will not be public-facing. Additionally, any voice utilized will not be distinctly identifiable in its generated speech.

The SAG-AFTRA's Corporate/Educational & Non-Broadcast Committee has endorsed this agreement, and it received subsequent approval from the union's National Executive Committee.

SAG-AFTRA's national executive director, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, emphasized the necessity of robust contracts to protect voice actors as AI technology advances. He stated the union's continued support for AI companies that adhere to their guidelines.

Crabtree-Ireland acknowledged that while some may not opt to work with AI companies, for those who do, securing informed consent and ensuring fair compensation is crucial. Lacking these protections, the AI landscape could become chaotic.

Cissy Jones, CEO of Ethovox, remarked that their company, unique for being led by voice actors, is excited about the collaboration with SAG-AFTRA to create a voice AI model that reflects the needs of voice professionals.

She stressed that engaging with AI should be voluntary and that Ethovox actively seeks out voice actors' input to ensure fair compensation and control over their voice contributions in AI development.

Previously, SAG-AFTRA urged for a strike in the video game industry to secure vital AI protections for its members, as noted earlier this year.

Additionally, in a notable milestone, the union achieved its inaugural AI protection agreement with Lightspeed LA as reported in September.
