SAG-AFTRA has reached its inaugural agreement for AI protections for actors with Lightspeed LA
In a noteworthy development, SAG-AFTRA has strengthened its stance on enhancing rights for video game actors through a collaboration with Lightspeed LA.
The developer, under the umbrella of Tencent, has endorsed the union's Interim Interactive Media Agreement. This agreement provides safeguards for actors, especially regarding concerns about the use of AI to alter or generate voice work.
Currently, SAG-AFTRA members are on strike, primarily due to worries that studios might utilize AI to modify recorded lines or create new content instead of re-engaging the actors.
Lightspeed LA has become the first gaming studio to endorse this innovative agreement, thus allowing union-represented performers to work with them amidst the ongoing strikes.
Steve Martin, the general manager of Lightspeed LA, expressed the studio's continual appreciation for the unique contributions of talent that bring creativity and a personal touch to video games. He stated, "Supporting our cast is the right thing to do and there was never any hesitation to consider the performer protections that anchor this agreement." Martin extended gratitude to Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and the SAG-AFTRA team for their cooperation in achieving this agreement. He continued, "On behalf of the Lightspeed LA team, we cannot wait to share the amazing world and narrative gameplay experience we are crafting with the help of our outstanding cast."
Sarah Elmaleh, speaking as the chair of the union's Interactive Media Agreement negotiating committee, emphasized that the strike seeks more than just prevention of unwanted AI use, aiming to introduce robust protections. She praised Lightspeed LA for understanding and committing to these protections for their present and future talent, calling their commitment both genuine and impactful. Elmaleh stated, "I am thrilled about this partnership and cannot wait to see what this talented team of developers and performers makes together."
SAG-AFTRA has also reached agreements with other prominent entities such as Activision, Blindlight, Disney, Electronic Arts, Formosa Interactive, Insomnia, Llama Productions, Take-Two Productions, VoiceWorks Productions, and WB Games in the past.
Lightspeed LA is developing The Last Sentinel, a narrative-driven open-world action game, with Troy Baker taking on the role of performance director. To support this project, the studio opened a new performance capture facility in July.
