Austria has officially recognized that the loot boxes in FIFA Ultimate Team violate the gambling law

Two months ago, an Austrian court ruled that the loot boxes in the PlayStation version of FIFA are gambling mechanics, and accused Sony of violating the country’s legislation. In April, his decision came into force.

According to the GamesMarkt portal, Sony had the right to appeal until April 3, but did not do so. Now the company is obliged to pay €338.26 to gamers who have previously applied to the court.

The court’s decision set a precedent in Austria. It is going to be used by the local law firm Padronus, which has already been approached by “hundreds” of other affected gamers. She is going to fight against loot boxes not only in FIFA, but also in CS:GO, Fortnite and Call of Duty.

The claim about loot boxes in FIFA came to Sony, and not to the Electronic Arts, which developed the football simulator, due to the fact that gamers made purchases through the PS Store and their payments were processed by Sony.
