South Korea has adopted an amendment on the disclosure of chances in loot boxes
The National Assembly of South Korea voted almost unanimously for an amendment to the Gambling Law — it was supported by 180 out of 182 deputies. The amendment will oblige developers to report with what probability items fall out of loot boxes.
Developers will have to indicate the drop rate of items in the game itself, on its official website and in promotional materials. Those who do not do this or indicate an incorrect coefficient face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won ($15.1 thousand).
Many South Korean developers have disclosed information about loot boxes before. In December 2021, the local Gaming Industry Association introduced a corresponding requirement in the so-called Self—Regulation Code, a list of rules that members of the association must comply with. However, loot boxes were not regulated at the legislative level.
