Roskomnadzor plans to block access to Amazon Web Services in Russia (UPDATED)

A document appeared on the network, according to which Roskomnadzor closes a large number of Amazon subnets. In total, there are plans to “block the oxygen” of 14 million IP addresses.

This afternoon, photos of documents appeared in the telegram channel “ZaTelekom” (their authenticity was confirmed by unnamed telecom operators to the Vedomosti publication).

They say that the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Technologies decided to take these measures, wanting to “effectively” block Zello, a mobile application for voice messaging. It was actively used by truckers when they were on strike against Plato.

The ban on all subnets from the list is explained by the fact that if at least one subnet is not blocked, then Zello “will resume its work in full.”

The decision was made during three meetings held on March 6, 13 and 21. The start of the implementation of the lock was scheduled for March 22.

In the documents that got into the network, the blocking is referred to as an experiment. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Roskomnadzor is not sure that it can actually block AWS.

If this happens, “it will lead to the blocking of a large part, if not all of AWS and many other, both gaming and Internet services. Including, for example, many sites on Bitrix that use cloud hosting,” he said in an interview with App2Top.ru , Alexey Ilyin, head of children’s projects of the game direction of VGTRK “Interactive Cartoon”.

Recall that Amazon Web Services is used by “90% of large gaming companies”. In the case of a real implementation of the planned scenario, Russia may be at least without Activision, Supercell and Ubisoft projects.
