A Reddit user has been ordered to pay Nintendo of America $4.5 million in a legal case involving the unauthorized distribution of hardware and software for the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo of America has been awarded $4.5 million in a legal case against James C. Williams, a Reddit user known online as 'Archbox,' due to copyright breaches.

As detailed by Aftermath, the court made this decision following the absence of a response from Williams to the legal proceedings.

Based on a court document, Williams is required to take down all digital storefronts under his operation that provided unauthorized Nintendo Switch game downloads.

Additionally, any social media accounts associated with these activities must be closed. Williams is also forbidden from engaging in activities related to distributing or selling Nintendo-related software or hardware.

The legal challenge by Nintendo commenced in March 2024, with the filing occurring in June. By October, the damages to be paid were set at $4.5 million.

Nintendo indicated the damages stemmed directly from Williams' activities, which included the unlawful sharing of Switch games and related software for bypassing systems.

These actions, Nintendo noted, significantly harmed not only its own interests and those of its partners but also affected numerous game industry professionals reliant on the legitimate sale of Nintendo products.

Earlier in the month, The Hague District Court in the Netherlands declared the sale of Switch mod kits that aid in game piracy as illegal.

Nintendo's efforts aimed to shield its intellectual property as well as support game developers worldwide relying on legit game sales. The ruling outlawed the sale of MIG Switch and similar devices across Europe.

In a statement, Nintendo emphasized its commitment to supporting legitimate game development and urged players to avoid using devices that can compromise the intended experience of their consoles and games.
