Xbox is introducing monthly cloud gaming limits to its Game Pass service as it "continues to invest in its reliability and performance"

Starting in November 2026, Xbox will set monthly gaming time restrictions for users of the Game Pass cloud service.

According to a company update, Game Pass Essential users will have up to five hours, Premium users ten hours, and Ultimate users fifteen hours each month for cloud gaming.

Subscribers who exceed these limits can buy additional playtime directly from the Xbox Store. Xbox has mentioned that "hours available, purchase options, and cloud features could differ depending on the region."

This change is expected to impact approximately 4% of Game Pass customers, with details on pricing to be revealed later.

The decision comes as the expenses associated with offering cloud gaming rise with its increased use and duration.

"By implementing monthly limits, we can continue to offer this service while maintaining its dependability and quality. We acknowledge that for certain users this could lead to increased costs."

In addition, as of November, individuals can enjoy Xbox cloud gaming by purchasing playtime hours even without a Game Pass membership and stream their eligible games on compatible devices.

This alternative is intended for those desiring access to cloud gaming now and then or those who prefer not to commit to a recurring subscription.

Users of Xbox One will have the ability to play select titles for Xbox Series X|S without the necessity of an immediate console upgrade.

In July, Xbox initiated trials of game streaming with advertisements, where advertisements appear before each gaming session, while the core gameplay remains unchanged.

This test aims to offer more budget-friendly gaming options using existing devices.

Advertising, when effective, can help make access more budget-friendly, allowing players to enjoy gaming without purchasing streaming services upfront and increases audience reach with new play methods.

These steps are aligned with CEO Asha Sharma's strategy to enhance "efficiency and affordability, alongside performance."

"Given the ongoing challenges in hardware and component availability, it's crucial for us to reimagine and provide more diverse gameplay options and purchasing choices for consumers."
