The creator of PUGB, Brendan Greene, has revealed a reorganization of PlayerUnknown Productions, acknowledging that financial constraints have limited the current path of the studio.
A statement by PlayerUnknown Productions, shared on X/Twitter, revealed the challenging choice to reorganize the company while affirming the continuation of their Melba technology development.
When PlayerUnknown Productions gained independence in 2021, they embarked on an ambitious journey to push the boundaries of large-scale virtual worlds. This involved forming a research team dedicated to Melba technology and creating their first practical use of terrain generation through "Prologue: Go Wayback!"
However, with funding limitations in mind, Greene decided to restructure. The Melba technology will still be developed by a smaller team, but progress on Go Wayback will be put on hold. The priority now is supporting employees impacted by these changes during this transition.
The announcement also included news that "Prologue: Go Wayback!"—the single-player open-world survival roguelike which offers a unique experience with each journey—will soon be available for free to all future players. Additionally, they are examining ways to offer refunds to players who purchased the game via Steam or Epic Games Store.
Brendan Greene, credited with creating PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, established PlayerUnknown Productions in 2021, based in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
