CD Projekt RED, known for its development and publishing efforts, has transferred ownership of the GOG distribution platform to Michał Kiciński, a co-founder of CD Projekt RED and GOG. This acquisition was executed for 90.7 million Polish zlotys, equivalent to approximately $25 million or £18.6 million.

Now the sole proprietor of GOG, Kiciński financed the acquisition with external funds. He continues to hold a significant stake in CD Projekt RED, with 10% of the company’s shares still under his ownership.

The agreement ensures that CD Projekt RED continues to distribute its major franchises, including The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, on GOG. This aligns with GOG’s mission of maintaining a library of classic games, which currently features over 11,200 titles. The company reassured customers that their access to purchased games remains unchanged and that current policies and funding practices will be maintained. An FAQ accompanying the sale highlights GOG's robust financial health and notes a successful year with increased gamer engagement.

GOG has been active in supporting niche games, like Santa Ragione's Horses, especially after it was removed from Steam and the Epic Game Store. In August, the platform showcased its commitment to user choice by offering a free game bundle as part of its Freedomtobuy.games initiative, in response to the shifts in how adult content is managed on platforms like Steam and itch.io.

Maciej Gołębiewski, GOG’s Managing Director, stated, “GOG and Michał Kiciński are united by a common vision of eternalizing games. As the market becomes more saturated and less focused on classic titles, we are more committed than ever to our unique mission of reviving and keeping classic games accessible.”

Kiciński added that GOG actively seeks new titles capturing a retro feel, and he is directly involved in developing several such games expected to launch on GOG by 2026.

For CD Projekt RED, selling GOG streamlines operations by offloading a minor revenue generator. In the recent earnings report for Q3 2025, GOG posted a net profit of $478,000 (1.7 million zlotys), after a $278,000 loss the previous year. In contrast, CD Projekt RED's primary business achieved a net profit of $53 million (19.1 million zlotys).

The majority of CD Projekt RED’s development team is devoted to The Witcher 4, with expansion efforts underway for the Cyberpunk 2 project, based in their new Boston hub. Other projects include Project Sirius, a multiplayer game within The Witcher universe, and the newly conceptualized Project Hadar.
