Itch.io has "re-indexed" free adult NSFW content, while paid content is set to be "gradually" reintroduced

Itch.io is in the process of "re-indexing" free adult-themed content with an aim to slowly bring back paid content. This move is part of their effort to reliably support a broad range of creators in the foreseeable future.

On August 1, itch.io's founder, leafo, shared an update indicating that the platform is in continuous talks with its payment processors due to increased "scrutiny" over the site's adult-oriented material.

As a response to the pressure, the platform had already removed NSFW content from its navigation and search features the previous week and modified its content guidelines to align with payment processor requirements.

This issue is not unique to itch.io. Valve has also restricted adult content on its platform by delisting NSFW games and updating its publication policies.

Itch.io requires developers to opt for free availability by selecting the No Payments option in their project's pricing edit to qualify for re-indexing.

Leafo mentioned that itch.io will introduce a new system for content warnings on NSFW pages, which all page owners must complete within a set timeframe if their pages were indexed in the past.

A statement from Stripe, one of itch.io's payment processors, indicated their inability to support sexually explicit content due to limitations from banking partners, despite card networks generally permitting such material with suitable registrations.

Stripe expressed hope for future support of adult content under the right conditions.

Leafo noted that itch.io is seeking out alternative payment services to support adult content and plans to reassess pages that had payment functions suspended for potential reinstatement.
