Final Fantasy XVI hits 3.5 million copies sold, indicating stalled sales after strong launch
It is no secret that Final Fantasy XVI failed to meet Square Enix’s expectations. New data on its life-to-date sales indicates that the game has a weak tail, confirming previous concerns about its commercial performance.
- During the latest financial results briefing, Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu told investors that Final Fantasy XVI has sold over 3.5 million copies globally since its launch on June 22, 2023. The news came from Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda, who today released a new report on Japanese public companies for Kabutan.
- This is the first time Square Enix has shared figures for FFXVI since June 2023, when it revealed that the game had sold 3 million units globally in its first six days. This included digital sales and shipments to retailers, meaning not all physical copies had been sold directly to consumers at the time of the announcement.
- Taking into account the new data, the strong launch didn’t translate into a long tail. Final Fantasy XVI has crossed the 3.5 million mark in roughly a year and a half since its launch.
- Last year, Kiryu told analysts that FFXVI, Foamstars, and FFVII Rebirth all failed to meet the company’s expectations.
Originally released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, Final Fantasy XVI arrived on PC in September 2024. Square Enix hasn’t disclosed the game’s development and marketing costs, so it is unclear whether it managed to recoup its budget.
For comparison, Final Fantasy XV surpassed 5 million in day-one shipments, breaking a franchise record for launch sales. FFVII Remake sold over 3.5 million copies in its first three days. Square Enix has yet to disclose any official figures for FFVII Rebirth, whose recently released PC version peaked at 40.5k concurrent players on Steam and became the biggest Final Fantasy title on the platform by that metric.
