Pathfinder: Kingmaker hits 2 million copies sold, but MY.GAMES doesn’t mention developer Owlcat Games
MY.GAMES has announced a new major milestone for Pathfinder: Kingmaker. In addition to its commercial success, the hit CRPG is now also part of the publisher’s game launcher.
What happened?
- My.Games’ subsidiary Knights Peak Interactive shared the news on January 23, stating that Pathfinder: Kingmaker has sold over 2 million copies globally.
- It took the game around six and a half years to cross this mark. In August 2021, Kingmaker’s original publisher Koch Media (now Plaion) announced it had surpassed 1 million units sold (in almost three years).
- Pathfinder: Kingmaker also became Knights Peak’s first game on My.Games Launcher. The app, which includes other titles like War Robots and Left to Survive, is designed to launch the company’s games, purchase in-game items, and connect with friends.
Knights Peak Interactive and Owlcat’s relationship with My.Games
Interestingly, the new press release makes no mention of Pathfinder: Kingmaker developer Owlcat Games. Established in 2016 as a subsidiary of My.Games, the team went independent in 2019. Despite the split, My.Games remained its key partner for some time and even invested an undisclosed amount of money in the studio in December 2019 through its MGVC (then MRGV) division.
In 2022, Owlcat revealed that the rights to Pathfinder: Kingmaker “remained with the parent company” and that the studio hasn’t received royalties from the game’s sales since 2019. It effectively lost ownership of Kingmaker after going independent.
The first Pathfinder game was originally published by Deep Silver, a division of Embracer Group’s Plaion (formerly Koch Media). According to SteamDB, the game’s publisher was changed from Deep Silver’s subsidiary Prime Matter to My.Games on May 20, 2024, and then changed again to Knights Peak on June 28.
My.Games launched the Knights Peak Interactive label last year to publish premium games for PC and consoles, as well as support “both emerging and established studios in reaching new heights in global markets and brand development.” The publisher’s portfolio currently includes Blast Brigade and Nikoderiko, with Mandragora and Tempest Rising among upcoming titles.
Knights Peak is led by former Plaion executives, including global brand & marketing director Mario Gerhold and creative director Jan-Eric Lauble. Eugenio Vitale, former director of product & technology at Plaion, is also director of Knights Peak and VP of third-party publishing at My.Games.
The details of Owlcat’s further relationship with My.Games are unclear, but the studio continued to work with Pathfinder owner Paizo and released the game’s sequel, Wrath of the Righteous, in 2021 after raising $2 million on Kickstarter.
Published by META Publishing, WotR sold over 1 million copies in less than two years. Last year, Owlcat Games launched a publishing label and gained full control over META’s portfolio, which includes games like Train Valley and Biped.
The studio’s latest title, Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, also became a commercial success. It surpassed 1 million copies sold in just over a year after launch, making it the fastest-selling game in Owlcat history.
