State Duma Deputy of the Russian Federation: the Russian gaming console will be based on the "Elbrus" processor, and its business model will be developed by the Skolkovo Foundation
Anton Gorelkin, a deputy of the Russian State Duma and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Information Policy, shared new details about the future Russian console on his Telegram channel. In particular, he spoke about its technical components.
“Elbrus-8C”
According to Gorelkin, the console will be equipped with a domestic processor, the “Elbrus.” At least a portion of the electronic components will also be of Russian production, although the deputy did not specify exactly which devices these will be.
As for the console’s operating system, Gorelkin writes that a final decision has not been made yet. The choice is between two options: “Aurora” and ALT Linux. It is worth noting that the proposal to base the console on "Aurora" became known back in April. The creators of the OS themselves came up with this idea, and later they were supported by Rostelecom—one of the candidates for the console manufacturers.
Gorelkin also added that the Skolkovo Foundation is responsible for creating the console's concept, its competitive advantages, and its business model. He hopes that the foundation understands the market situation and the fact that “Elbrus” processors cannot compete with those in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Therefore, the deputy believes, the foundation needs to come up with something “unconventional.”
“The Russian console is not being created just to port a hundred old games and report the completion of the president’s directive. This platform should primarily serve the purpose of promoting and popularizing domestic video game products, expanding their audience beyond PC and mobile gaming,” concluded Gorelkin.
Previously, Gorelkin stated that theoretically, VK could already create a console by simply connecting a joystick and VK Play to the smart speaker “Marusya.”
