During discussions with journalists, the studio's representatives were tight-lipped and did not disclose the number of employees laid off. According to Game Industry Layoffs, a site tracking layoffs in the gaming industry, eight people lost their jobs at Heart Machine. The studio's staff consists of over 50 employees.
Heart Machine representatives stated that those affected would receive severance pay and several months of health insurance. Additionally, they will receive a share of the revenue from the games they are developing, as outlined in their signed contracts.
The studio emphasized that the layoffs would not impact the development of the action game Hyper Light Breaker, which is preparing for early access release. Other projects, including the side-scroller Possessor(s), will also remain unaffected.
Heart Machine is the third gaming company this week to announce layoffs. Earlier, Reflector Entertainment and Kwalee also reduced their workforces.
