Atari has acquired the intellectual property for Transport Tycoon
Atari has reached a deal with seasoned game designer Chris Sawyer to secure Transport Tycoon, a renowned management simulation game.
Although specific future initiatives for the franchise were not disclosed, Atari indicated having an extensive plan for its preservation and growth. This strategy could encompass new digital and physical releases of the classic games, the creation of fresh content or independent titles, as well as merchandising ventures.
Originally launched in 1994, Transport Tycoon saw an expanded edition in the following year and was most recently available as a mobile game in 2013.
Wade Rosen, chairman and CEO, expressed the company's commitment to both preserving and enhancing Sawyer's innovative work by stating, "We are honored that Chris has entrusted us with Transport Tycoon, and our team is committed to both honoring and advancing his groundbreaking creation."
Atari already manages the publishing rights for Locomotion, Sawyer's spiritual sequel from 2004, along with the associated RollerCoaster Tycoon series.
In recent years, the company has been actively acquiring retro brands and intellectual properties. This includes the purchase of the Intellivision brand along with more than 200 games last May.
Additionally, Atari has been acquiring successful indie games, with this year's acquisitions featuring titles like Surgeon Simulator and Totally Reliable Delivery Service.
