Merge Games is shutting its doors after operating for 15 years

Merge Games is officially ceasing operations shortly after implementing staff reductions and shuttering its office. The independent publisher, known for titles such as Dead Cells and Darkest Dungeon, disclosed this development through a social media announcement.

The company, which expanded from a small startup in an attic 15 years ago to a team of 22 members, stated that it has published numerous indie games during its existence. "None of this would have been possible without those who are passionate about indie gaming, from every developer to the players," the announcement expressed. "Anyone who crossed paths with someone from Merge should know they worked incredibly hard and are remarkable individuals."

Earlier reports by GamesIndustry.biz indicated that an unspecified number of staff were let go, alongside the closure of the Chelford office of Merge Games.

At the time, Christina Seelye, CEO of Maximum Entertainment, the parent company of Merge, attributed this move to a consolidation process that commenced in February.

Currently, the remaining products from Merge Games are being absorbed into Maximum Entertainment's portfolio, and further clarification has been sought from the latter.

Correction: It was initially misstated that Merge Games published Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. However, it was responsible only for distributing the physical edition, with Dotemu being the original publisher.
