A dedicated fan group has acquired the trademark for Flappy Bird, marking the return of the game after a decade
Update, September 16, 2024: Dong Nguyen, the creator of Flappy Bird, clarified on social media that he is not associated with the game's upcoming return.
He stated, "No, I have no [relation] with their game, and I did not sell anything. I also don't support crypto."
The Flappy Bird Foundation Group, led by designer Michael Roberts, head of 1208 Productions, a company involved with cryptocurrency and Web3, holds the trademark.
Original story, September 13, 2024: Flappy Bird is preparing to make a return nearly ten years after its initial removal from app stores.
According to IGN, the Flappy Bird Foundation Group, a collective of dedicated fans, acquired the game's trademark from Gametech Holdings, which previously obtained it from Nguyen.
The group has also secured rights to Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the game said to have inspired Flappy Bird.
The game is slated for web browser release by late October, with an iOS and Android version set for 2025 featuring new characters and game modes.
"We are thrilled to bring back Flappy Bird with a new experience aimed at engaging players for years," expressed Michael Roberts, the creative head of the group.
Initially launched in 2013, Flappy Bird became unavailable when Nguyen decided to withdraw it in 2014, overwhelmed by its viral success. However, it remained playable for those who had already downloaded it.
